As many of you know, over 90% of the animals that arrive to RBAR are as a result of being dumped, abandoned & discarded outdoors. But recently we received a different kind of plea for a young cat, unspayed, bred to the tune of 3 to 4 litters in her short 3 years on this planet.
Nothing could prepare us for sweet Pita's condition. 3 years old, weighing only 2.8 lbs, the size of a 5 month old kitten, spine protruding, hip bones protruding, as if they would cut through her dehydrated skin & emaciated body at any moment.
Though we were advised by our amazing vet partner that this could be a humane euthanasia case, we felt that Pita deserved every single tool we had in our arsenal to save her worthy life. We simply could not allow that her life on this planet was to breed, have her offspring taken away by humans, to have the same thing repeated and for it all to end in her loss of life. Because she landed here, because we have the most loving and compassionate community, we know we can save her together.
Upon intake, we immediately learned Pita was severely anemic. Her red blood cell count was nearly non-existent, and even holding herself upright took most of her strength. Over the past few weeks we have followed the course of treatment advised by our vet and with medication, round-the-clock care, and a whole lot of love poured into her, she is showing signs of improvement. Pita's blood cell counts are improving, she is eating on her own, and she is stronger on her feet.
Pita's expenses are mounting rapidly and we are asking the RBAR village for help.
Pita is very unwell but the incredible news is she is responding to treatment! Her blood cell counts are climbing and other health markers are slowly creeping back into normal range. She is eating on her own and when we can keep her nausea at bay she has a voracious appetite.
We are still working to determine the underlying cause of her anemia. Pita has a long road to recovery and our bills are mounting quickly. At the moment we are making multiple vet visits a week for:
At this rate our vet expenses are running ~$500 per week.
On top of that, she requires some special food to ensure she gets enough nutrients while she is in such a fragile state. We have been purchasing Gastro EN and Urgent Care wet food from the vet and these cans run from $5 - $7 per can.
We are also going through pee pads and cups of her other favorite food (Simply Nourish Salmon and Tuna) at a rapid pace.
Are you in a position to help fund her care? Anything you can give is a blessing and will help us bring this little soul to health so that she can lead the best life - that of a chubby, loved, and safe house cat.
